On June 08 2011, the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia
granted permission for the relocation of Kerpen-Manheim due to the
expansion of a large open-pit coal mine. Since 2012, around 1,500
residents have been relocated to Manheim-Neu or have moved away. The
demolition of Kerpen-Manheim is planned to be completed in 2024.
The long-term project documents how the landscape is being shaped
during the process of demolition. Between 2019 and 2022, I made regular
visits to the area at different times of the year to get an idea of what
was happening.
